Chapter 8
DON'T WAIT TOO LONG
The room had a cosy shabbiness. The crowd was light at eleven, but thickened towards midnight. The Palomino was L.A.'s Country music show- case, but a number of R‘n B and Blues bands also played there. The crowds were warm and knowledgeable, and the place went through till 2.00am. It was on Lankershim Boulevard, North Hollywood, and the trio had made it there by cab, Sara having returned the car earlier in the evening. Morgan, as usual, was leaning on the bar drinking heavily and Sara was teasing a couple of ice cubes with her cocktail stick.
‘When's he coming on?’ She was becoming impatient.
‘Midnight.’ came the reply. Then, looking at his watch, ‘About now.’
The lights around the stage got brighter and Paul's voice came over the microphone.
‘I'd like to apologise before I start,’ he said, ‘for not being a Country and Western singer. I'm English, and I don't think I should be trying to bring coals to Newcastle.’ The punters looked at each other, not grasping this particular point. ‘I’ll be doing some of my own stuff, and maybe some R’n B and maybe a little Blues later on, but as a token of my regard for Country Music, I would like to kick off with a song I wrote which has leanings in that direction.’
This brought one or two cheers from the crowd. The others clapped politely.
I called you today, long-distance telephone.
Two thousand miles babe, really made you feel alone.
And your voice came clear, full of sunshine and full of wine.
Oh it seems so long since I've seen that distant ocean shine
You say you've been sweeping up, all the dust of our affair
No crumbs of comfort there, no tasty crusts of love to spare
And the wind whistles around my hat, the rain aims arrows at my back
And all my bad, sad dreams re-arm and plan another dawn attack
Don't wait too long, Crazy time is rushing on.
Downhill it rolls, a train out of control. Hold on to love, don't let it go,
Don't wait too long
Now the city rides on my shoulder, ‘neath a sky that's grey as lead
Human warmth is on the run, there's a price upon its head
If I had money in my pocket, instead of songs inside my mind,
I'd catch the next plane out of here just to see those dark eyes shine
Now I'm investing all my money in this yellow hotel telephone
But I can't seem to negotiate a normal dialing tone
And the management's on holiday, room service is off tonight
And the drinks machine gave me an electric shock
As my last coins dropped from sight
Don't wait too long
Crazy time is rushing on
Downhill it rolls, a train out of control
Hold on to love, don't let it go
Don't wait too long
He got more than the usual cheer reserved for support acts, and carried on happily into his short set.
Morgan had emptied half a bottle of Bushmills and was trying to persuade Sara to help him with the other half. Her hand kept trying to cover her glass, and the whiskey spilt partly into the glass, partly over her hand, and mostly over the table.
